Fallout 3 Remake Development and What we Know so Far

Fallout 3 Remake - Remaster

While Bethesda has not officially confirmed a Fallout 3 remake, evidence from leaked documents and insider reports indicates it is likely in development. The release seems to be delayed beyond the originally leaked 2024 timeline, with some speculation pointing to 2027, especially after the recent Oblivion Remaster announcement. This uncertainty reflects broader delays in Bethesda's project schedules, making the exact timeline unclear.

Fallout 3, released in 2008 by Bethesda Game Studios, is a beloved entry in the post-apocalyptic RPG series, known for its open-world exploration and narrative depth. Given the success of recent Fallout-related media, such as the Fallout TV series, and Bethesda's history of remasters, speculation about a Fallout 3 remake has been rife. However, as of April 18, 2025, no official announcement has been made by Bethesda, leaving fans reliant on leaks and rumors for updates. I already touched on this idea in my article "Is it possible we get a new Fallout game in 2025?", where I discussed all the possibilities regarding what I believe we will see on Fallout Day 2025.

Leaked Documents and Initial Plans

In September 2023, a significant leak from Microsoft documents, revealed during the FTC vs. Microsoft trial, included a ZeniMax Media release schedule from July 2020. This schedule, detailed in IGN: Oblivion Remaster, Fallout 3 Remaster, and More Leaked From Microsoft Document, listed a Fallout 3 Remaster for fiscal year 2024 (FY24), aligning with the calendar year and ending December 31, 2024. Other articles, such as PCGamesN: Microsoft's biggest ever leak reveals Fallout 3, Oblivion remasters and much more, corroborated this, noting plans for remasters alongside new Doom and Dishonored titles.

However, the reliability of this schedule is tempered by the fact that many projects listed, such as Starfield (originally FY21) and The Elder Scrolls 6 (FY24), faced significant delays. Starfield, for instance, launched in September 2023, well after its planned FY21 window, as noted in Insider Gaming: Was a Fallout 3 Remaster Just Leaked by the FTC?. This suggests that the FY24 timeline for Fallout 3 may no longer hold, contributing to the current uncertainty.

Recent Insider Reports and Speculation

Recent developments, particularly around the Oblivion Remaster, have fueled speculation about Fallout 3. On April 15, 2025, GameSpot: Oblivion Remaster Info And Screens Leak, Apparently Releasing Next Week reported that the Oblivion Remaster is set for a shadow drop in the week of April 21, 2025, based on leaks and insider Jeff Grubb's confirmation. This aligns with Eurogamer's report on April 16, 2025, in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remake is real | Eurogamer.net, stating a planned release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Given this, some sources suggest Fallout 3's release might follow a similar pattern. An X post from SynthPotato on April 16, 2025, claimed that Fallout 3 Remastered was listed to release two years after Oblivion Remaster in the leaked documents, projecting a 2027 timeline. This is supported by TheGamer: "It'll Be A While" Before The Fallout 3 Remaster Is Revealed, Claims Leaker, published on April 17, 2025, where insider NateTheHate2 stated it will be "a while before we see it," likely tied to The Elder Scrolls 6's release, expected no earlier than 2026.

Given this, the projected 2027 timeline for Fallout 3, based on a two-year gap post-Oblivion Remaster, seems plausible. However, the exact date remains speculative, with no official confirmation from Bethesda's recent X posts, which focus on Indiana Jones, DOOM, and Fallout 76, as seen in their timelines.

Fallout 3

In conclusion, while there is no official word, the evidence leans toward a Fallout 3 Remaster being in development, with a likely release around 2027, following the Oblivion Remaster's April 2025 launch. The community remains engaged with fan projects, but still no official updates from Bethesda. TBH, I would rather have a Fallout 1 & Fallout 2 (even Tactics) remastered then Fallout 3, but hey, I will not complain. What are your thought on Fallout 3 Remaster, let me know in the comments!
